These images were carved and hand printed using a reductive linocut printing technique. Multiple carvings are made from a single block for each color in the print. This creates a layering effect similar to traditional Japenese woodblock prints or “mokuhanga”.

These images are hand carved from cherry woodblocks using japanese chisels and knives. Mokuhanga is the Japanese method of wood block printing using water based pigments compared to the western style of block printing which uses oil based inks and often a printing press. All of these images are pressed by hand using a barren.

In 2019 I was honored to be part of this collaborative woodblock print. To commemorate the launch of the Cuphead video game on Nintendo switch, this print was designed in-house by studio MDHR and sold as a limited edition run of one hundred through Iam8bit’s website. The Japanese horror punk rock band called “Balzac” was in on the collaboration as well. Their mascot named “Skullman” is looming in the background while the bands frontman named Hirosuke Nishiyama wrote all of the calligraphy by hand for the design. To create this print I hand carved seven wood blocks and hand printed the edition using traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques.

Starting in the Fall of 2017, I began to work in collaboration with the talented artist Jed Henry. Jed first designs his images in photoshop. The designs are then transferred to wood blocks for carving. After the carving is complete, I hand print the individual colors to create the finished print, which are sent back to Jed for signing and numbering. Please click the titles of the images for a link to Jed’s Ukiyo-e Heroes website for purchasing.

These small paintings on paper are made with acrylic/water based pigments. I like the intimacy and immediacy of smaller paintings. I can experiment with color and composition at this scale.
